Visit the Hermione in Bayonne ⛵
A major project not to be missed!
Since autumn 2021, the Hermione has been laid up in the port of Bayonne in Anglet for a major refit. This major maintenance operation, dubbed the Grand Carénage, offers a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of the restoration of this emblematic ship.
The Hermione, an exact replica of the 18th-century frigate that carried the Marquis de Lafayette to the United States to support the American insurgents, is a vital part of maritime history. Its unique architecture and historic role make it a veritable treasure trove of France's naval heritage.
During your visit, made possible by the Hermione - La Fayette Association, the ship's owner, you will plunge deep into the fascinating history of the Hermione and her unique architecture. You'll have the chance to explore her two upper decks, learn how her cannons work, and even get up close to the usually submerged part of her hull - a rare experience that will help you understand the scale of the work in progress.
Visits
There are two options for discovering this maritime jewel: a self-guided tour, lasting around 45 minutes, or a guided tour. The latter, offered in two variants, allows you either to immerse yourself in the history and secrets of the frigate during a 1:30 discovery tour, or to dive into the heart of the Grand Carénage with a detailed explanation of the extraordinary work in progress, including an exploration of the underwater part of the hull, also lasting 1h30.
