Seudre Estuary, Oyster farming ponds
Poised betwixt the land and the sea, the Charente-Maritime area has four rivers reaching the ocean via its own estuary.
Among these exceptional sites is the Seudre Estuary. At the very heart are the oyster farming ponds at Marennes-Oléron, Europe’s largest oyster cultivation area and the estuary is a mosaic of salt marshes and man-made waterways. Aquatic gardens and little oyster farm ports as well as picturesque forts are all to be found at this celebrated place. A boat can ferry you across the Seudre.
