La Vélodyssée obtains the EuroVelo Certification

A bit of context 🚴

The EuroVelo Network

The EuroVelo routes were designated 27 years ago as a European network of long-distance cycling routes, based on the knowledge of a group of cycling activists. As a result, the EuroVelo network is a work in progress and does not yet represent a fully developed and safe network for now. That’s why, on the interactive map at EuroVelo.com, a legend indicates different stages: in the planning phase, under development, developed, developed with EuroVelo signs, and finally, certified.

La Vélodyssée (EuroVelo 1)

Between 2017 and 2020, La Vélodyssée took part in the European project AtlanticOnBike, alongside six other countries from the EuroVelo 1 network. This project aimed to highlight the natural and cultural richness along the Atlantic coast while boosting the economy through cycle tourism.

During this period, an in-depth assessment was conducted to improve La Vélodyssée’s route, infrastructure, services, and promotion. This led to proposals for enhancements, ensuring an even better experience for cycling tourists.

What is EuroVelo Certification ? 🤔

Certified EuroVelo routes undergo a comprehensive evaluation process, including an on-site survey. This process is part of the European Certification Standard (ECS) methodology, which defines a set of criteria for different user groups regular cyclists, occasional cyclists, and cyclists with more specific needs, such as those using specialized bikes or cycling with families.

EuroVelo-certified routes have met at least 100% of the essential criteria covering the needs of regular cyclists and 70% of the important criteria meeting the needs of occasional cyclists. Since the EuroVelo network consists of sections with varying levels of infrastructure, services, and marketing, obtaining EuroVelo Certification represents the highest level of quality demonstrated through this evaluation process.

The EuroVelo Certification ensures that cycling routes meet high-quality standards. This label guarantees that the paths are well-developed, services are adapted, and signage is clear. La Vélodyssée, as part of EuroVelo 1, has worked hard to meet these requirements.

What improvements have been made ?

  1. Enhanced safety and comfort
Now, more than 76% of the route is reserved for cyclists, ensuring a peaceful journey compared to 71% in 2019.

  2. Optimal riding comfort
69% of the paths now have a smooth surface, offering an even more enjoyable cycling experience.

  3. Improved signage
Significant efforts have been made to enhance sign visibility and distribution along the route. Among nearly 400 improvement points identified since 2019, 80% have now been completed. This makes navigation even easier for cyclists, allowing them to focus on their adventure.

  4. More services for cycling tourists
The number of Accueil Vélo certified accommodations has almost doubled, now offering over 600 options near the route. Additionally, around 100 service areas and rest stops have been installed close to the route, making the journey even more comfortable.
